The Hat-Box ( cajon ) Hand Drums This World Percussion Instrument - The Hat - Box "cajon"Hand Drums are wood shell drums - 3/16" thick, eight inches high and come in 10",12" and 13" diameters, with wood drum heads. They look like the wooden hat boxes made to put hats in back in the 20's and 30's - thus, the name "Hatbox". They are similar to the popular cajons but are cylindrical instead of box shaped. This is done so the performer can play the drum between their legs or put the drum on a stand for ease of playing. The Hatbox shells come in three types of wood; Okoume Mahogany, Maple and Russian Birch. The drum in the video has Okoume shells with Sapelle drum heads but can be made with maple, oak, walnut and zebra woods, just to name a few. Christian De Juan Music Man.... that is incredible!!
